More than a week has passed since a magnitude-6.8 earthquake struck Dingri County in southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region on January 7. The tremor left many villagers displaced and in need of assistance. Amid ongoing resettlement and reconstruction efforts, acts of solidarity and compassion are emerging on the frontline.
In the small village of Cuo’ang, located in Quluo Town, firefighters from the Xizang Forest Firefighting Special Operations Unit have gone beyond their call of duty. Our reporter, Zhao Chenchen, visited the village where these dedicated firefighters are not only safeguarding the community but also preparing warm meals for the affected residents.
“The earthquake disrupted our lives, but the firefighters have been a pillar of support,” said one villager. “They’ve helped rebuild our homes and now they’re cooking for us. We are deeply grateful.”
The firefighters arrived in Cuo’ang Village shortly after the earthquake to assist with emergency response and relief efforts. Recognizing the immediate needs of the villagers, they set up a makeshift kitchen to provide daily meals. The aroma of home-cooked food brings comfort amid the challenges of recovery.
“We’re here to support the community in every way we can,” said a member of the firefighting unit. “Preparing meals is a small gesture, but it brings everyone together and lifts spirits during this difficult time.”
As reconstruction progresses, the collaborative efforts between the firefighters and villagers exemplify resilience and unity. The shared meals have become a symbol of hope, fostering a sense of togetherness that strengthens the community’s resolve to rebuild and move forward.
Resettlement initiatives continue in Dingri County, with local authorities coordinating resources to restore infrastructure and provide assistance. The dedication of the firefighters and other first responders highlights the collective commitment to overcoming adversity.
For the villagers of Cuo’ang, the support from the firefighting unit has made a significant difference. “Their kindness gives us strength,” said another resident. “We know we are not alone in this journey.”
