In the wake of the magnitude-6.8 earthquake that struck Dingri County in southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region on January 7, the spirit of community and solidarity shines bright. Over a week has passed since the quake, and resettlement and reconstruction efforts are in full swing.
At Cuo’ang Village in Quluo Town, the brave members of the Xizang Forest Firefighting Special Operations Unit have taken on more than their usual duties. Today, they are not just firefighters—they are cooks, caretakers, and companions to the villagers affected by the disaster.
Our reporter, Zhao Chenchen, spent the day with these dedicated individuals as they prepared and served lunch to the residents of Cuo’ang Village. The aroma of freshly cooked rice and stir-fried vegetables filled the air, bringing a sense of normalcy and comfort to a community striving to rebuild.
“We want to do everything we can to help,” said Li Wei, a member of the unit. “Cooking for the villagers is just one small way we can make their lives a bit easier during this difficult time.”
The villagers, many of whom are still coming to terms with the loss and damage caused by the quake, expressed heartfelt gratitude. “Their kindness warms our hearts,” shared Dorje, a local resident. “It’s not just about the food; it’s about knowing that we are not alone.”
The scene at Cuo’ang Village is a testament to the resilience and unity of the people in Xizang. Children laughed as they helped set up tables, elders shared stories over meals, and amidst it all, the firefighters worked tirelessly, their usual uniforms replaced with aprons and ladles.
As reconstruction continues, the collaborative efforts between the authorities, emergency services, and local communities offer hope for a swift recovery. Acts of kindness, like those of the Xizang Forest Firefighting Special Operations Unit, highlight the enduring spirit that will help Dingri County rebuild stronger than ever.
