More than a week has passed since a powerful magnitude-6.8 earthquake shook Dingri County in southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region on January 7. As the region grapples with the aftermath, resettlement and reconstruction efforts are in full swing.
In the midst of this challenging time, the firefighters of the Xizang Forest Firefighting Special Operations Unit have stepped beyond their usual duties. At Cuo’ang Village in Quluo Town, they are not only aiding in rescue and rebuilding efforts but also bringing comfort to the villagers in the most heartfelt way—by preparing lunch.
Under the crisp mountain air, smoke rises from makeshift outdoor kitchens where firefighters, clad in their uniforms, stir steaming pots and grill meats over open fires. The aroma of freshly cooked food fills the air, drawing smiles from villagers who have endured days of uncertainty and hardship.
“Our primary mission is to ensure everyone’s safety, but we also want to make sure that the villagers are taken care of during this difficult time,” says one firefighter as he adds spices to a simmering stew. “Sharing a meal is a way to bring everyone together and lift spirits.”
Children gather around, watching with fascination as their heroes don aprons over their firefighting gear. For many, it’s a moment of joy amid the disruption caused by the earthquake. Elderly residents express their gratitude, acknowledging that these acts of kindness provide not just nourishment but hope.
Reporter Zhao Chenchen, on the frontline, witnesses the camaraderie and resilience of the community. “It’s inspiring to see how these firefighters are going above and beyond,” she notes. “Their efforts are a testament to the strength and unity of the people here.”
As lunch is served, laughter and conversations fill the temporary shelters. The simple act of sharing food becomes a symbol of solidarity, bridging the gap between the rescuers and those they serve.
The road to recovery in Dingri County is long, but with each passing day, gestures like these fuel the collective determination to rebuild and move forward.
