Gen Z Leads the Charge for Sustainable Growth

Beijing, China – As the 2024 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit approaches, economies across the Asia-Pacific region are being called upon to actively pursue sustainable growth and embark on a more resilient path forward. The intertwined challenges of economic development and environmental sustainability have never been more prominent, raising critical questions about the future trajectory of global growth.

Is there a contradiction between sustainable development and economic growth? According to emerging young leaders from around the world, the answer is a resounding no. At a recent gathering at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing, guests from Suriname, the United States, and India shared their unique insights on the future of sustainable growth.

The event, part of the “The Power of Youth+” series, highlighted the vital role that Generation Z plays in shaping a greener future. Participants discussed the positive impact that the green economy can bring, not only in mitigating environmental risks but also in spurring innovation, creating jobs, and fostering inclusive economic prosperity.

“Sustainable development and economic growth are not mutually exclusive,” said a participant from the United States. “In fact, they complement each other by promoting long-term stability and equitable opportunities.”

Practical actions were a focal point of the discussions, with emphasis on how Gen Z can contribute to sustainable development. Ideas ranged from advocating for policy changes and adopting sustainable lifestyles to leveraging technology and entrepreneurship to address environmental challenges.

“Our generation has the tools and the passion to drive significant change,” noted a guest from India. “By taking collective action, we can ensure a resilient and sustainable future for all.”

The perspectives shared at the event underscore a growing consensus among young people that sustainability is not just an environmental imperative but an economic one as well. As APEC economies prepare to convene, the voices of Gen Z signal a shift towards integrating sustainability at the core of economic strategies.

The path towards sustainable growth is a collaborative effort, and the engagement of the younger generation is crucial in steering global policies towards a greener and more resilient future.
