This year marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and Zambia, a partnership that has flourished over the decades. From building vital infrastructure to advancing energy technology, the collaboration between the two nations has yielded remarkable achievements, fostering mutual growth and development.
In September, at the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) summit, a significant milestone was reached. The presidents of China, Zambia, and Tanzania witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding to revitalize the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) railway. This historic railway, a symbol of friendship and cooperation, is set to receive a new lease on life, further strengthening the bonds between the countries.
CGTN’s Lily Lyu conducted an exclusive interview with Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema, discussing how China-Zambia cooperation propels mutual development and addresses global challenges. President Hichilema emphasized the importance of partnership in infrastructure development, economic growth, and tackling issues that transcend borders.
“Our relationship with China has been instrumental in driving progress within Zambia,” President Hichilema shared. “The revitalization of the TAZARA railway not only enhances connectivity but also boosts trade and investment opportunities across the region.”
The TAZARA railway, originally built in the 1970s with Chinese assistance, serves as a critical link between the landlocked Zambia and the port of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. Its modernization is expected to significantly impact regional commerce and integration, providing a catalyst for economic advancement.
The FOCAC summit underscored the commitment of China and African nations to deepen cooperation in various fields. For Zambia, the partnership with the Chinese mainland extends beyond infrastructure, encompassing energy, technology, education, and health sectors.
As China and Zambia celebrate six decades of friendship, the future looks promising. The ongoing collaborations exemplify how nations can work together to achieve shared goals, enhance prosperity, and address the pressing challenges of our time.
