Just across the strait from Taiwan, Fujian Province has emerged as a beacon of opportunity for many Taiwan people seeking new beginnings. The historical and cultural ties between Fujian and Taiwan run deep, and in recent years, these bonds have been strengthened as more Taiwan compatriots make the journey across the water.
In April, renowned journalist Liu Xin from CGTN visited the vibrant cities of Quanzhou and Pingtan in Fujian Province. During her visit, she met with numerous Taiwan compatriots who have chosen to establish their lives and careers on the mainland. Through their heartfelt stories, a picture emerges of shared heritage, renewed connections, and the pursuit of dreams.
One such story is that of Chen Wei, a young entrepreneur from Taiwan who has set up a successful tech startup in Quanzhou. “Fujian feels like home,” he shares. “The cultural similarities make it easier to settle in, and the economic opportunities are abundant.”
Another Taiwan resident, Lin Mei, moved to Pingtan to explore educational opportunities for her children. “I wanted them to experience our shared history firsthand,” she explains. “Here, they can learn about our ancestors while building a future.”
These personal narratives highlight the growing trend of Taiwan people seeking new horizons in Fujian. The province’s welcoming policies and supportive environment have made it an attractive destination for those looking to bridge the strait and forge stronger connections.
The stories of these individuals, along with many others, will be featured in an upcoming special report by Liu Xin. This exploration into the lives of Taiwan compatriots in Fujian offers valuable insights into cross-strait relations and the human experiences that shape them.
