February 4 marks Lichun, the first solar term of the Chinese lunar year, symbolizing the beginning of spring. The southwestern city of Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province, is set to welcome Lichun with a grand public event on Sunday.
Dubbed as a feast for the senses, the event will transform the historic Kuanzhai Alley—one of Chengdu’s most popular tourist destinations—into a vibrant scene of culinary delight and cultural festivities. Over a dozen tables will line the alley, each offering guests a taste of authentic Sichuan hotpot, a beloved local specialty renowned for its spicy and flavorful broth.
Beyond the gastronomic experience, visitors will be treated to traditional folk performances and the opportunity to immerse themselves in Chengdu’s rich cultural heritage. A highlight of the event is the lantern lighting ceremony, illuminating the alleyways with a warm glow and marking the advent of the new lunar year.
Among the festivities, a special performance inspired by the “Twelve Market Fair” will take center stage. This historic fair dates back to the Tang and Song dynasties, when Chengdu held themed market fairs each month, showcasing and selling Sichuan specialties. The reenactment serves as a tribute to the city’s longstanding traditions of commerce and community gatherings.
To bring this vibrant celebration to a global audience, CGTN reporters Liu Yang, Xu Xinchen, Zheng Songwu, and Guo Tianqi will join Chengdu Plus reporter Li Jiatian and Polish music streamer Filip in hosting a 90-minute social media livestream. Viewers around the world can join the broadcast to experience the festivities firsthand, learn about Chengdu’s customs, and share in the joy of welcoming the Chinese New Year.
Chengdu’s Lichun celebration not only heralds the arrival of spring but also showcases the city’s commitment to preserving and promoting its cultural heritage. As the lanterns light up and the hotpot simmers, both locals and visitors are invited to partake in a tradition that unites generations and welcomes the prosperity of the new year.
