A magnitude-6.2 earthquake struck Jishishan County in northwest China’s Gansu Province at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, resulting in the deaths of over 100 people, according to the provincial earthquake relief headquarters.
The powerful quake caused significant damage to residential buildings, as well as water, electricity, and road infrastructure in and around the epicenter. Residents experienced intense tremors that disrupted essential services and left many homes uninhabitable.
In response to the disaster, a total of 1,440 firefighters and other personnel from the national comprehensive fire rescue team were dispatched to the affected area to conduct rescue operations. The swift mobilization aims to assist in search and rescue efforts, provide medical aid, and help restore critical services.
Emergency shelters have been set up to accommodate displaced residents, and local authorities are coordinating relief efforts to ensure that those affected receive necessary support. The earthquake has prompted neighboring regions to assess infrastructure stability and prepare for potential aftershocks.
Further updates are expected as rescue operations continue and more information becomes available.
