Beijing is witnessing a momentous reunion as five of the legendary zodiac fountain heads—the ox, tiger, monkey, pig, and horse—are now on display at Yuanmingyuan, the Old Summer Palace. This exhibition, open until October 29, marks the first time in 163 years that these priceless artifacts have been reunited.
The first four copper statues, previously collected by the Poly Art Museum, are now joined by the horse head, bringing together a significant portion of the original set of twelve sculptures. These bronze-cast heads were once part of the imperial water fountain at Yuanmingyuan, a masterpiece that blended Eastern zodiac symbolism with Western architectural design.
The reunion of these artifacts holds deep cultural significance, reflecting China’s rich heritage and the enduring allure of the zodiac. Visitors to the exhibition have the rare opportunity to witness this fusion of art and history, celebrating a legacy that transcends time.
