The death toll from the devastating earthquake that struck Morocco has risen above 2,800, according to the country’s state TV on Monday. The magnitude 7.0 earthquake hit the North African nation on Friday, leaving thousands more injured as search and rescue operations continue.
The epicenter of the earthquake was near the town of Ighil in Al Haouz Province, approximately 70 kilometers southwest of Marrakesh. The powerful tremor caused widespread damage, collapsing buildings and infrastructure, and leaving communities in urgent need of assistance.
Rescue teams are tirelessly working to locate and assist survivors amidst the rubble. However, the challenging terrain and remote locations of some affected areas are hindering efforts. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed as authorities mobilize resources to support those impacted by the disaster.
