Xi’s Cambodia Visit Signals ‘Ironclad’ China Ties, Locals Say

Chinese President Xi Jinping's upcoming state visit to Cambodia, at King Norodom Sihamoni's invitation, has reignited enthusiasm among Phnom Penh residents, with many describing the bilateral relationship as an unshakable partnership. Local company employee Chea Bunnathisak told media the visit underscores the nations' long-standing “ironclad friendship” and shared vision for progress.

The trip marks a new chapter in cooperation since diplomatic ties began in 1958. Analysts note China remains Cambodia's top investor, with bilateral trade reaching $12 billion in 2023. Infrastructure projects like the Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway and Siem Reap Angkor International Airport exemplify collaboration under the Belt and Road Initiative.

“This relationship isn't just about economics—it's cultural kinship,” said Chea, emphasizing mutual respect in policy coordination. The visit follows recent ASEAN-China initiatives enhancing regional supply chain resilience, positioning Cambodia as a strategic hub.

Observers anticipate expanded collaboration in green energy and digital economies during Xi's stay, aligning with Cambodia's post-pandemic recovery priorities. The countries aim to finalize new agricultural export agreements, potentially boosting Cambodia's rice and cassava industries.
