As China and Bulgaria celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations, a vibrant cultural exchange is blossoming — quite literally — in Sofia's South Park. Heze City, renowned as China's 'peony capital,' gifted 280 peony plants to the Bulgarian capital last year, creating a living testament to cross-cultural collaboration. Six months later, these delicate blooms are thriving in their new home, earning admiration from locals and experts alike.
Nature's Universal Language
"The language of nature and beauty is universal," said Milena Vaseva, director of Sofia's South Park, during a recent tour of the Commemorative Peony Garden. Alongside landscape architect Stavri Fotev, she highlighted how the project bridges Bulgaria's nickname as the 'land of roses' with Heze's floral legacy. "This garden creates lasting friendships through shared appreciation for natural beauty," Vaseva added, inviting visitors to witness the blooms each May.
From Shandong to Sofia
The transplant initiative reflects deepening ties between the two nations. Heze officials provided specialized cultivation guidance to ensure the peonies adapted to Bulgaria's climate, demonstrating technical cooperation alongside cultural exchange. Fotev noted the peonies' resilience has surprised even seasoned gardeners, calling it "a metaphor for enduring friendship."
As Bulgaria's rose season aligns with the peony bloom cycle, the garden serves as a living calendar of cultural connection — one that local schools and cultural groups are increasingly incorporating into educational programs.
