Embracing Icy Waters: Inside Moscow’s 63-Year-Old Winter Swimming Club

Winter swimming, the invigorating practice of plunging into icy waters, is more than just a sport in Russia—it’s a cherished tradition. With temperatures plunging well below freezing, thousands of Russians embrace the cold, reaping benefits like improved blood circulation and enhanced physical and psychological resilience.

In Moscow alone, over 80 winter swimming clubs offer enthusiasts a chance to dive into this exhilarating experience. Among them stands the Serebryany Bor (Silver Forest) Walrus Club, one of the oldest and most esteemed winter swimming organizations in Russia, boasting a rich history spanning 63 years.

We sat down with Andrey Zamyslov, the chairman of the Silver Forest Walrus Club and president of the Winter Swimming Federation of Moscow, to delve into the world of winter swimming. Andrey shared insights into the meticulous preparation techniques required to brave the icy waters, the methods of building cold resistance, and the importance of maintaining flexibility amidst freezing temperatures.

“Winter swimming is not just a test of endurance; it's a way of life,” Andrey explains. “It teaches you to conquer your fears, enhances your health, and brings a unique sense of community.”

Under Andrey’s guidance, members of the Silver Forest Walrus Club learn to acclimate their bodies to the cold gradually. They begin with brief immersions, slowly increasing duration as their tolerance builds. Emphasis is placed on proper breathing techniques, mental preparedness, and post-swim warm-up routines to ensure safety and maximize health benefits.

The club’s location in the picturesque Serebryany Bor area provides a serene backdrop for this frosty pastime. Surrounded by snow-laden trees and tranquil landscapes, swimmers find not only physical rejuvenation but also a profound connection with nature.

As the sun glistens off the icy surface, laughter and camaraderie fill the air—it’s a pool party like no other. The Silver Forest Walrus Club invites all who are curious to step out of their comfort zones and experience the thrill of winter swimming.
