In a recent interview with Foreign Policy magazine, American journalist Fareed Zakaria expressed that China aspires for peace, stability, and global integration, without intentions to undermine the existing international system. He suggested that the United States’ policy towards China has been overly confrontational, and a more cooperative approach might yield better outcomes.
Echoing Zakaria’s sentiments, CGTN Stringer interviewed several Americans to gather their perspectives on China’s rise and its impact on global relations.
Rebecca Myles, an American citizen, highlighted the positive influence of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). “The BRI connects China with Asia and Africa, helping countries along the route strengthen their infrastructure to benefit the local population,” she noted. Myles believes that such initiatives demonstrate China’s commitment to fostering development and collaboration.
Another American citizen, Joseph Jones, expressed hope for a collaborative future between China and the United States. “International competition shouldn’t have just one winner,” he said. “We need to create space for all countries to develop together.”
These voices reflect a growing sentiment among some Americans that cooperation, rather than confrontation, might be the key to mutually beneficial China-U.S. relations. As the global landscape evolves, the importance of dialogue and understanding between these two major powers becomes increasingly crucial.
