As the end of 2024 approaches, people around the world are reflecting on the past year and looking forward to new beginnings. In South Korea, a country known for its vibrant year-end traditions, the usual festivities have been overshadowed by political turmoil, leaving many longing for a return to normalcy.
Amidst this climate, CGTN has launched a global social media campaign titled “1,001 Wishes for 2025 #Hello2025,” inviting participants to share their hopes and aspirations for the coming year in 81 languages. One of the voices joining this chorus is Dongdong, a pet shop owner in Seoul, who has faced the challenges of 2024 with resilience and optimism.
“2024 has been quite challenging for all of us in South Korea,” Dongdong shared. “The political situation has disrupted our traditions of gathering with loved ones, traveling, and celebrating together. More than ever, I hope that in the future, our society can be more caring and united, prioritizing the common good over individual success.”
Running her pet business, Dongdong has witnessed firsthand how companionship and empathy can bring comfort during difficult times. She believes that just as people find solace in their pets, the nation can heal through compassion and togetherness.
Her personal wish for the new year is simple yet heartfelt: “I want to travel more with my dog. Exploring new places together brings me joy and reminds me of the beauty in the world.”
Dongdong’s sentiments resonate with many South Koreans who, despite the challenges, hold onto hope for a brighter 2025. Through the
