As Macao marks the 25th anniversary of its return to China, the city continues to shine with its culturally diverse and inclusive charm. Over the past 25 years, the Macao Special Administrative Region’s (SAR) economy has accelerated its moderate diversification, enhancing its economic strength and global appeal.
Among those drawn to Macao’s opportunities is Angolan master’s student in global public health, Meury Ferreira, who is studying at the University of Macau. “As a foreigner, I find the educational environment in Macao to be very diverse. It is a very foreigner-friendly city,” she shared.
Ferreira is one of many overseas youths who have chosen to study or work in the Macao SAR, attracted by its unique blend of cultures and burgeoning prospects. She noted that the development of the Greater Bay Area (GBA) has opened new doors for innovation and career growth, aligning well with her own ambitions.
“The construction of the Greater Bay Area allows Macao the opportunity to invest in innovative technologies. I am considering working in Macao or the GBA in the future,” Ferreira said.
The GBA initiative, which integrates Macao with Hong Kong and nine cities in Guangdong Province, aims to create a world-class economic and innovation hub. For students like Ferreira, this means access to a wide range of opportunities in cutting-edge industries and a vibrant international community.
Macao’s commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment is evident in its educational institutions and policies that welcome international talent. Ferreira’s experience reflects the city’s efforts to position itself as a global destination for education and professional development.
As Macao continues to evolve, the stories of students like Ferreira highlight the SAR’s role in connecting cultures and driving progress within the Greater Bay Area and beyond.
