Peruvian sinologist Joseph Cruz Soriano has dedicated his life to bridging the cultural gap between Peru and China. With a deep passion for martial arts, lion dance, and calligraphy, Joseph began learning Chinese at a young age, immersing himself in the rich tapestry of Chinese culture.
Over the years, Joseph’s fascination with Chinese traditions led him to delve into the Confucian classics. His scholarly pursuits culminated in the study of the I Ching, or the “Book of Changes,” one of the oldest Chinese classics. His dedication to understanding this profound text inspired him to translate it into Spanish, making its wisdom accessible to the Spanish-speaking world.
Joseph believes that Peru and China share a deep friendship and common cultural values. He notes that both cultures place a high value on family, respect for elders, and harmony with nature. These shared values have, in his view, created a strong foundation for mutual understanding and exchange.
He is delighted to see a growing number of young Peruvians embracing the opportunity to learn Chinese at Confucius Institutes. Joseph sees this trend as a positive step toward deepening the cultural and educational exchanges between the two countries. “The more we understand each other’s culture and language, the stronger our bonds will become,” he remarked.
As Peru continues to engage with China on various fronts, Joseph’s work serves as a bridge connecting the two nations. His efforts not only promote cultural understanding but also inspire others to explore the rich heritage that both countries have to offer.
