A New York Filmmaker’s Journey into Chinese Culture
For over 13 years, New York-based filmmaker Soraya Arrabal has woven herself into the fabric of Chinese culture. Collaborating closely with Chinese colleagues and immersing herself in diverse cultural experiences, Soraya’s professional journey has blossomed into a profound personal passion.
“I naturally fell in love with China after being exposed to the culture at work,” Soraya shares, reflecting on her emergence into a world rich with history and tradition. Her travels took her to Wuhan, in central China’s Hubei Province, where she experienced firsthand the vibrant life that pulses through the city.
Soraya is captivated by the depth and diversity of Chinese culture. “Whether it’s the food culture or the regional differences, the richness is unparalleled,” she notes. From bustling markets offering an array of culinary delights to serene landscapes that change from one province to the next, each experience has deepened her appreciation.
As a filmmaker, Soraya finds inspiration in the works of Wong Kar-wai, the director she admires most. “His shooting techniques and narration style provide a very good interpretation of China,” she explains. Wong’s films, known for their visual symbolism and emotional depth, resonate with her own artistic vision and feed her creative spirit.
Beyond the lens, Soraya feels the rich romance embedded in Chinese culture. It’s a sentiment that transcends language and tradition, touching upon universal themes of love, connection, and humanity. Her journey is a testament to the power of cultural exchange and the profound impact it can have on one’s life.
“Chinese culture has influenced not just my work, but my worldview,” Soraya concludes. “It’s an endless source of inspiration that continues to shape who I am both personally and professionally.”
