In an effort to understand how Confucius’s teachings resonate today, CGTN Stringer visited South Africa to speak with locals about their perspectives on Confucianism. What emerged was a fascinating dialogue bridging ancient Chinese philosophy and modern African values.
Ubuntu and Ren: A Shared Emphasis on Humanity
Clea Schultz Mofokeng, a South African resident, drew compelling parallels between Confucius’s concept of “ren”—often translated as benevolence or humaneness—and the South African philosophy of Ubuntu. “Both ren and Ubuntu encourage us to be kind and compassionate towards others,” Mofokeng explained. “They remind us that our humanity is interconnected.”
