As the 2024 China International Confucius Cultural Festival approaches, the world turns its attention to Qufu in east China’s Shandong Province, the birthplace of the renowned philosopher Confucius. Set to begin on September 27, the festival marks 2,575 years since Confucius’s birth, celebrating his enduring legacy and influence on global cultures.
In an effort to understand how Confucius’s teachings resonate today, CGTN Stringer visited South Africa to speak with locals about their perspectives on Confucianism. What emerged was a fascinating dialogue bridging ancient Chinese philosophy and modern African values.
Ubuntu and Ren: A Shared Emphasis on Humanity
Clea Schultz Mofokeng, a South African resident, drew compelling parallels between Confucius’s concept of “ren”—often translated as benevolence or humaneness—and the South African philosophy of Ubuntu. “Both ren and Ubuntu encourage us to be kind and compassionate towards others,” Mofokeng explained. “They remind us that our humanity is interconnected.”
Ubuntu, a Nguni Bantu term meaning “I am because we are,” emphasizes the importance of community, mutual caring, and shared responsibility. Similarly, Confucius’s teachings highlight the significance of empathy, respect, and moral integrity in fostering harmonious relationships.
The Timeless Value of Education
Another interviewee, Greta Frieslaar, expressed admiration for Confucius’s advocacy of education. “He championed universal access to education over 2,500 years ago,” she noted. “Education empowers individuals and uplifts societies. It’s a principle that remains vital today.”
Confucius believed that education was a means to cultivate virtuous character and promote social harmony. Frieslaar’s sentiments reflect a shared recognition of education as a foundational pillar for personal growth and societal development.
Bridging Cultures Through Shared Values
The insights from South Africa highlight how Confucius’s teachings transcend cultural boundaries, finding relevance in diverse contexts. As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, such cross-cultural dialogues underscore the universal themes of compassion, education, and community.
The upcoming festival in Qufu not only commemorates Confucius’s life but also invites global audiences to reflect on the enduring impact of his philosophy. By exploring common ground between different cultural traditions, the festival fosters greater understanding and appreciation among peoples worldwide.
A Celebration of Global Heritage
The 2024 China International Confucius Cultural Festival promises a rich program of events, including academic forums, cultural exhibitions, and artistic performances. Participants from around the globe will have the opportunity to engage with Confucian thought and explore its modern-day applications.
As the teachings of Confucius continue to inspire individuals across continents, the festival serves as a reminder of our shared human values and the potential for unity through mutual respect and understanding.
