South African Youth Highlights Mutual Benefits of China-South Africa Educational Ties

As the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) approaches in Beijing from September 4 to 6, voices from across Africa are highlighting the deepening ties with China.

Recently, CGTN invited Africans to share their views on China-Africa cooperation in areas such as trade, business, cultural and people-to-people exchanges, environmental protection, and sister cities.

In one such dialogue, Nokukhanya Khanyi Zulu, a South African English teacher who once lived in China, sat down with Liu Yuankang, also known as Devin, a Chinese student majoring in African Studies at the University of Cape Town. They discussed the fruits of China-South Africa cooperation and shared their experiences living in each other’s countries.

Nokukhanya noted that South Africa has deeply cooperated with China in the education sector. “The number of Confucius Institutes in South Africa is the highest on the African continent,” she said, emphasizing the growing interest in Chinese language and culture. “The Chinese language has been incorporated as part of the curriculum in local high schools.”

She reflected on her time in China, expressing appreciation for the cultural exchange and the opportunities it provided. Devin shared his experiences studying in South Africa, highlighting the mutual understanding and friendships that have developed.

Their stories underscore the mutual benefits of educational and cultural exchanges between China and South Africa, fostering closer ties and deeper understanding ahead of the upcoming FOCAC Summit.
