From Mongolia to Tsinghua: A Student’s Journey Bridging China and Mongolia

When Biligtsaikhan attended a summer school in Harbin in 2018, she had no idea how profoundly it would change her life’s direction. Hailing from Mongolia, she was introduced to China’s remarkable development and ambitious poverty alleviation policies that, between 2013 and 2018, lifted approximately 82 million rural Chinese residents out of poverty. Inspired by what she witnessed, she decided to pursue her studies in China, enrolling in international relations at the prestigious Tsinghua University.

Adjusting to life in China wasn’t easy at first. The language barrier posed significant challenges, and the vast cultural differences were sometimes overwhelming. However, as time passed, Biligtsaikhan discovered the warmth and friendliness of the Chinese people, which helped her feel more at home. “The kindness of everyone I met made the transition so much smoother,” she recalls.

During her time at Tsinghua University, she became an active member of the Student Association of the Belt and Road Initiative. This involvement not only deepened her understanding of China’s global vision but also provided opportunities to engage with cutting-edge industries. Visiting Chinese AI technology companies, she communicated with technologists and entrepreneurs, gaining insights into the innovation driving China’s economy.

Looking ahead, Biligtsaikhan is determined to enhance her proficiency in the Chinese language and leverage her experiences to foster cooperation between China and Mongolia. “I hope to be a bridge connecting our two countries,” she says with conviction. Her journey reflects a growing trend of international students in China who are eager to contribute to cross-border collaboration and cultural exchange.
