Gazans Seek Shelter in Rafah as Displacement Intensifies

Rafah, Gaza Strip — As the conflict between Israel and Hamas escalates, the southern city of Rafah in the Gaza Strip has become a focal point for thousands of displaced Palestinians seeking refuge. Once considered a safe haven, Rafah is now under threat as Israeli military operations advance, leaving its residents and newcomers in a state of increasing desperation.

According to the United Nations, large parts of Rafah have turned into a “ghost town,” with approximately 450,000 Gazans forcibly displaced from the area by Israeli evacuation orders in the past week. The mass movement of people has overwhelmed the city’s capacity to provide shelter and basic necessities.

In Khan Yunis, another city in southern Gaza, schools have been converted into makeshift shelters. CGTN visited one such facility where families have gathered under dire circumstances. “We were displaced from Gaza. The people here have seen death many times. We are desperate,” said one resident, echoing the sentiments of many who have been uprooted multiple times due to the ongoing violence.

The humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate as access to clean water, food, and medical supplies becomes increasingly limited. Aid organizations have called for immediate corridors to allow for the safe passage of civilians and the delivery of essential aid. However, ongoing hostilities present significant challenges to these efforts.

The international community watches closely as the situation unfolds, raising concerns about the potential for a deepening humanitarian crisis. Diplomats and human rights organizations are urging all parties to prioritize the safety and well-being of civilians caught in the crossfire.

For the people of Rafah and the wider Gaza Strip, uncertainty looms large. With their “last refuge” now endangered, the displaced populations face difficult choices with few, if any, safe options remaining.
