Musician Nilko Andreas on His Enduring Love for China and Cultural Exchange

New York City classical musician Nilko Andreas has developed a profound connection with China after a life-changing performance in Shenzhen, south China, several years ago. Reflecting on that experience, Andreas said, “It was a life-changing experience for me. The first time I went to China, this door was open. And I discovered this infinite world of possibilities.”

Andreas shared his insights on the cultural similarities between China and the United States through the lens of food. Comparing Chinese soup and congee with “chupe,” a stewed shellfish dish from his hometown, he emphasized that despite geographical distances and language barriers, people’s emotions are quite similar. “It’s a country that I would love to come back to over and over. That cultural exchange must keep on happening, so I will always go back,” he expressed.

His experiences highlight the importance of ongoing cultural exchanges between countries. Through music and shared experiences, Andreas believes that understanding and connections between people from different cultures can continue to grow.
