Baiyangdian Lake’s Revival: Unveiling the Pearl of North China’s Underwater Beauty

Baiyangdian Lake, affectionately known as the “Pearl of North China,” is nestled in the Xiongan New Area of north China’s Hebei Province. This vast expanse of water has been a vital ecological and cultural landmark since the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127), when the imperial court expanded the marshlands to form a meandering “Water Great Wall.” This strategic transformation allowed the lake to store floodwater, regulate the climate, and replenish groundwater, cementing its role as a lifeline for the surrounding regions.

In April 2017, China unveiled plans to establish the Xiongan New Area, encompassing the three counties surrounding Baiyangdian Lake. This initiative sparked significant efforts to rehabilitate the lake’s environment. Comprehensive ecological restoration projects have been implemented, leading to a remarkable improvement in water quality—from Category 5 to Category 3. These advancements not only rejuvenate the lake’s ecosystem but also enhance the livelihoods of local communities and contribute to regional sustainability.

Photographer Zhou Fang’s recent documentary delves into the enchanting underwater world of Baiyangdian Lake. Through his lens, viewers are invited to explore the diverse aquatic flora and fauna that thrive beneath the surface. The documentary captures the transformation of the lake’s environment, showcasing the success of restoration efforts and highlighting the extraordinary beauty of the Xiongan New Area. It stands as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of human development and nature conservation.
