From Village to City: New Lives in Xizang’s Poverty Alleviation Journey

Absolute poverty, once a persistent challenge in the Xizang Autonomous Region, has become a thing of the past. Through comprehensive poverty alleviation policies and the dedicated efforts of local communities, over 628,000 people have been lifted out of poverty by the end of 2019.

Among the many stories of transformation are those of Yeshe Trinley and Pubu Tashi. Five years ago, they moved from Maizhokunggar County to Lhasa as part of a relocation program. Transitioning from a remote rural village to a modern Xizang-style building in the city, they embraced new opportunities and challenges.

In their new home at the Tongxinyuan community, the changes are palpable. Sitting in their bright, cozy living room, Yeshe reflects on the journey. “I am happy with the choice I made,” he says. The relocation offered him access to training in sewing, incense-making, and other skills, which have become his sources of income.

For Pubu, the move has brought significant benefits for his family. His children are receiving better education, and their living conditions have improved markedly. “Life here has opened many doors for us,” he shares.

The success of such relocation programs in Xizang is a testament to the effective implementation of poverty alleviation strategies. By providing new housing, education, and employment opportunities, these initiatives are reshaping lives and communities.

As Xizang continues on its path of development, stories like those of Yeshe and Pubu underscore the profound impact of targeted policies and the resilience of the human spirit in overcoming adversity.
