Former NZ PM John Key Highlights China-New Zealand Friendship Amid Wang Yi’s Visit

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is visiting New Zealand and Australia for the first time in seven years, marking a significant step in strengthening diplomatic ties between the nations. Invited by New Zealand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Winston Peters, and Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Penny Wong, Wang Yi’s visit underscores the importance of fostering relationships in the Asia-Pacific region.

Former New Zealand Prime Minister John Key has shared his insights on the evolving relationship between New Zealand and China. Reflecting on his tenure, Key emphasized New Zealand’s pioneering role in engaging with China economically. “New Zealand was the first Western country to recognize China as a market economy and the first developed country to negotiate and sign a free trade agreement with China,” he noted.

Key’s leadership saw numerous interactions with Chinese officials and multiple visits to China, which he believes have drawn the two countries closer together. “Our efforts laid the foundation for a strong and enduring friendship between New Zealand and China,” he said.

Currently serving as the chairman of the Investments Committee at Stonewood Key China, Key continues to advocate for enhanced trade cooperation, particularly in new and sustainable energy sectors. He is scheduled to visit China again in July, aiming to create more opportunities for investors from both countries. “There is immense potential for collaboration in sustainable energy, and I am committed to bridging opportunities between New Zealand and China,” Key stated.

Wang Yi’s visit comes at a time when global economic dynamics are shifting, and nations are seeking to strengthen partnerships. The engagement between China, New Zealand, and Australia highlights a mutual interest in promoting regional stability and economic growth.
