Merchants at Beijing’s Xinfadi Market Reflect on Video Call with President Xi Jinping

As the 2024 Chinese New Year approaches, the bustling atmosphere returns to Beijing’s Xinfadi market, one of the largest wholesale markets for agricultural products in China. Last year during the Spring Festival, President Xi Jinping sent festive greetings via video link to merchants and shoppers at Xinfadi, a moment that left a lasting impression on those involved.

Ukrainian vlogger Anastasiia Reznik, who has lived in China for five years, recently revisited the market to catch up with two merchants who spoke with President Xi during that memorable call.

Li Zhongyue, affectionately known as the “Corn Tycoon,” recalled the excitement of speaking directly with the President. “We are grateful to President Xi for his concern and support,” Li said. “It motivates us to produce high-quality agricultural products for the people.”

Similarly, “Bean Tycoon” Gu Zhilong was deeply moved by President Xi’s warmth and approachability. “He was so affable,” Gu reflected. Addressing the concerns many consumers have about food safety, Gu emphasized their commitment to quality. “We strictly control the quality of our agricultural products to ensure that people receive fresh, safe vegetables.”

Their dedication underscores the vital role that markets like Xinfadi play in China’s food supply chain, especially during festive seasons when demand surges. As preparations for the new year gather pace, merchants like Li and Gu remain steadfast in their mission to enrich dining tables across the country.
