Sixty Years of China-France Diplomacy: Cultural Exchanges Flourish in Lyon

As China and France prepare to celebrate the 60th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2024, the city of Lyon stands as a testament to the enduring cultural ties between the two nations. The New Franco-Chinese Institute, inaugurated in 2014 following Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit, symbolizes a history of exchange dating back to the 17th century.

“Lyon’s historical links with China are unique in Europe,” remarked Alain Labat, vice president of the institute. “Our city has long been a bridge connecting our cultures.”

This year, the China-France Year of Culture and Tourism brings renewed excitement to these connections. A notable example is the Saint Marc Choir of Lyon, renowned for their performances in China. With four tours and nearly 40 concerts planned for 2024, the choir is eager to share their music across the continents.

“Diplomatic relations serve as a means for us to facilitate our encounters and travels to China,” said Nicolas Porte, director of the choir. “We are thrilled to continue this journey of cultural exchange.”

The upcoming events not only celebrate past achievements but also look forward to future collaborations. As both nations embrace this significant milestone, the people of China and France reaffirm their commitment to mutual understanding and shared cultural experiences.
