Perched at an average altitude of over 4,000 meters above sea level, Gyangze County in Shigatse City, southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region, has witnessed a remarkable transformation over the past seven decades.
In the early 1950s, the residents of Xizang faced immense challenges due to the region’s rugged terrain and lack of infrastructure. With no complete highways, many villages remained isolated, inaccessible by road. The high mountains and deep valleys made travel difficult, hindering economic development and limiting access to essential goods and services.
The turning point came in 1954 with the construction of the first highway connecting Xizang to the rest of China. This monumental project paved the way for subsequent infrastructure developments. Over the years, extensive networks of highways and the introduction of high-speed railways have revolutionized travel for the local population.
“Our lives have changed dramatically,” says Drolma, a young resident of Gyangze County. “Now we can enjoy delicacies from all over the country, even from around the world. The connectivity has opened up our hometown to new opportunities.”
These developments have not only improved transportation but have also spurred economic growth, tourism, and cultural exchange. The once remote villages are now bustling with activity, and locals eagerly welcome visitors to experience the unique beauty of Xizang.
“I invite everyone to visit our beautiful hometown,” Drolma adds with a smile. “We are proud of our heritage and excited to share our culture with the world.”
The modernization of Xizang stands as a testament to China’s commitment to improving the livelihoods of its people through infrastructure and development. As roads and railways continue to expand, the region is poised for even greater strides in the years to come.
