Since the 18th Communist Party of China (CPC) National Congress, the CPC Central Committee, with Xi Jinping at its core, has been dedicated to steadily improving the whole-process people’s democracy. Recognizing the diverse ways to realize democracy, China’s unique system includes the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), a political organization that embodies representation from various walks of life and ethnic groups.
The CPPCC plays a crucial role in China’s governance. Members carry out studies and surveys on issues of public concern, report on social conditions and public sentiment, and put forward opinions and suggestions to the Party and the government. Among these members is Dr. Huang Yuguang, whose recent proposal has significantly impacted women’s healthcare in China.
Labor pain is often considered one of the most severe pains that women experience. With advances in medical technology, labor analgesia—painless childbirth—has emerged to greatly reduce this pain, earning the moniker “the light of mankind.” Currently, the labor analgesia rate in China stands at 53 percent, a notable increase driven in part by Dr. Huang’s proposal for widespread adoption of painless labor techniques.
American vlogger Marissa recently visited Dr. Huang at Peking Union Medical College Hospital to explore the story behind his proposal. Dr. Huang shared his insights on the importance of addressing public concerns through the CPPCC. “As a CPPCC member, I have the responsibility to represent the people’s feelings, listen to public concerns, and help solve their problems,” he stated.
Dr. Huang’s advocacy for painless childbirth reflects the CPPCC’s mission to improve the lives of Chinese people by bridging the gap between the public and the government. His efforts not only alleviate the physical suffering of women during childbirth but also highlight the effectiveness of China’s whole-process people’s democracy in addressing societal issues.
