Gazans Return to Ruined Homes as Israel-Hamas Truce Extended by Two Days

The first temporary humanitarian truce between Hamas and Israel went into effect in Gaza at 7 a.m. local time on November 24. On November 27, a Qatari official announced that a deal had been reached to extend the truce for an additional two days. This extension allows for further exchanges of hostages and prisoners and enables more humanitarian aid to enter Gaza.

As the sound of gunfire subsides, many displaced residents of Gaza are making their way back to their homes in search of daily necessities. However, they are met with the harsh reality of widespread destruction. Numerous buildings across the Gaza Strip have been reduced to rubble due to extensive bombing.

One local resident showed the devastation near his home, which was leveled by the bombing. “This was our home,” he said, pointing to the piles of debris. “Now there’s nothing left.”

Another resident, who survived three airstrikes, expressed a profound desire for peace. “We just want to live in peace,” he said. “What can we do? Our homes are destroyed, but we have nowhere else to go.”

The truce extension brings a glimmer of hope for the people of Gaza, allowing for the delivery of much-needed humanitarian aid. Yet, the path to rebuilding lives and homes remains daunting. The international community watches closely as both sides navigate this fragile ceasefire, hoping it may lead to a more lasting peace in the region.
