Twin Miracles of Eurasia: China’s Jiuzhaigou and Croatia’s Plitvice Lakes Unite for Conservation

China’s Jiuzhaigou and Croatia’s Plitvice Lakes National Park, often referred to as the twin pearls of Eurasia, are forging a path of cooperation in geological conservation. Both renowned for their breathtaking connected lakes, majestic waterfalls, and diverse wildlife, these natural wonders are linked through their shared karst landscapes.

In a recent visit, students from Beijing Foreign Studies University traveled to Plitvice Lakes National Park to engage with Croatian biologist Sanja Zalac. The dialogue centered on the collaborative efforts between China and Croatia in preserving and restoring these fragile karst ecosystems.

“Jiuzhaigou and Plitvice Lakes face similar geological challenges,” Zalac noted. “Protecting the karst landforms is crucial, and by learning from each other’s experiences in geological restoration and protection, we can develop more effective conservation strategies.”

This partnership not only strengthens environmental ties between the two nations but also symbolizes a connection along the “green Silk Road,” promoting sustainable practices across Eurasia. The exchange of knowledge and expertise aims to safeguard these UNESCO World Heritage sites for future generations.

As global interest in environmental conservation grows, such international collaborations highlight the importance of shared responsibility in preserving our planet’s natural treasures.
