Canadians Express Concern Over Japan’s Third Fukushima Wastewater Release

The third discharge of nuclear-contaminated water from the tsunami-damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant began on November 2, following statements from Japanese officials that the previous releases ended smoothly. Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), the plant’s operator, plans to release approximately 7,800 tonnes of the radioactive wastewater in this round.

In Canada, local residents are voicing their concerns over Japan’s approach. A CGTN Stringer recently took to the streets to gather opinions from Canadians who shared their worries and opposition to the continued dumping of the wastewater into the ocean.

Maitri Shah, a Canadian financial analyst, expressed that the Japanese government should have sought consensus with other nations before proceeding with the release. “The environment and people worldwide will eventually bear the consequences of this decision,” she stated.

Many Canadians fear the long-term environmental impact of the radioactive water on marine ecosystems and global health. The call for international collaboration and transparent communication on such critical environmental issues resonates strongly among the public.

As Japan continues with its plan, the global community watches closely, emphasizing the need for responsible actions that consider the shared environment and the well-being of people across borders.
