65-Year-Old Gazan Woman Refuses to Leave Pets Amid Conflict

Amid the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip, 65-year-old Fakhr Taj Shair has become a symbol of resilience and compassion. Despite the dangers surrounding her, she refuses to abandon her beloved pets—a pair of parrots and a turtle.

Since the outbreak of the latest Israel-Palestine conflict on October 7, the Palestinian Health Ministry reports that over 10,000 people have been killed in Gaza. The intensifying situation has forced tens of thousands of Palestinians to flee their homes in search of safety.

Fakhr has sought refuge at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, where she has constructed a makeshift hut for herself and her pets. Each day, she braves the perilous environment to find food for them. “I wasn’t scared when bombed,” she said. “All I could think about was these parrots and this turtle. They are all living creatures like me.”

Her unwavering dedication to her animals amidst such adversity highlights the profound bonds that endure even in the most challenging circumstances. Fakhr’s story resonates with many who cherish the sanctity of life and the connections that give hope during times of turmoil.
