Cambodia’s Banana and Rice Exports to China Soar Amid Strengthened Ties

Cambodia’s agricultural exports to the Chinese mainland have seen remarkable growth, particularly in bananas and rice, highlighting the strengthening economic ties between the two nations.

In September, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet paid an official visit to China—his first overseas trip since taking office in August. This visit signified the great importance both countries attach to the continuous development of their traditional friendship. China remains Cambodia’s largest trading partner and primary source of foreign investment, contributing significantly to Cambodia’s economic and social development.

Cambodia’s main exports to China each year include milled rice, bananas, mangoes, cassava, and seafood. But just how many bananas did China purchase from Cambodia in 2022? And of the 630,000 tonnes of rice Cambodia exported last year, how much was destined for China?

While specific figures vary, it is evident that China’s demand for Cambodian agricultural products is substantial and growing. The increase in exports not only boosts Cambodia’s economy but also strengthens the partnership between the two countries.

In the streets of Shanghai and Phnom Penh, curiosity abounds as people ponder the scale of this trade. The burgeoning exports symbolize more than economic transactions; they represent a deepening connection and mutual prosperity within the region.
