China’s Red Cross Provides $200,000 Emergency Aid to Earthquake-Hit Afghanistan

Beijing, October 8, 2023—In the wake of two powerful earthquakes that struck Afghanistan on Saturday afternoon, the Red Cross Society of China has announced a donation of $200,000 in emergency humanitarian aid to the Afghan Red Crescent. The funds aim to support rescue and disaster relief efforts in the affected regions.

The twin earthquakes, both measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale, jolted western Afghanistan, resulting in significant loss of life and widespread property damage. The epicenters were located in the Herat province, a region already grappling with economic and humanitarian challenges.

According to local authorities, hundreds have been reported dead or injured, with the numbers expected to rise as rescue teams reach remote areas. Homes and infrastructure have been severely damaged, leaving many residents without shelter as aftershocks continue to threaten the region.

The Red Cross Society of China’s swift response underscores the importance of regional cooperation in times of crisis. In a statement released on Sunday, the organization expressed its deep condolences to the victims and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Afghanistan’s relief efforts.

Afghanistan’s rugged terrain and limited resources have posed significant challenges to rescue operations. International aid and support are crucial to address the immediate needs of survivors, including medical assistance, food, and temporary shelter.

The humanitarian gesture by China highlights the ongoing efforts to strengthen ties and provide support within the Asian community. As rescue operations continue, the international community watches closely, hoping for successful relief efforts and a speedy recovery for those affected.
