When she first set foot in Beijing, 17-year-old Indonesian student Celia Annetta knew she was embarking on a journey that would change her life. Now a psychology student at Tsinghua University, Celia reflects on the path that led her from the bustling streets of Jakarta to the heart of China’s capital.
Celia’s fascination with China began in 2014 when she attended a summer school program. “That experience opened my eyes to a new world,” she recalls. Inspired by the rich cultural heritage—calligraphy, kung fu, and more—she decided to pursue her high school education in China, immersing herself fully in the language and traditions.
But it was China’s work culture that truly captivated her. “The fast-paced, serious, and diligent working style here is so different from Indonesia’s,” Celia notes. “People are incredibly dedicated to their work, and that has taught me a lot about discipline and efficiency.”
The contrast between the laid-back atmosphere of her hometown and the dynamic environment of Beijing pushed Celia out of her comfort zone. “It was challenging at first,” she admits. “But adapting to this environment has helped me grow personally and academically.”
Over the years, Beijing has become Celia’s second home. She cherishes the friendships she’s made and the opportunities that have come her way. “Living here has broadened my perspective,” she says. “I’ve learned to appreciate different ways of thinking and working.”
Looking ahead, Celia hopes to delve deeper into China’s trading culture and business practices. “China plays such a significant role in global economics,” she explains. “Understanding its business landscape is crucial, and I want to be a part of that.”
