French Viewers Seek More Films Portraying Modern China

The 25th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF), one of the Chinese mainland’s most prestigious movie industry events, celebrated its 30th anniversary with a grand opening on June 9, 2023. This year’s festival not only reflects on the rich legacy and innovation within the Chinese film industry but also underscores Shanghai’s pivotal role in shaping cinema.

In tandem with the festival, China Global Television Network (CGTN) took to the streets of France to gauge French audiences’ tastes in Chinese films and filmmakers. The survey revealed a growing appetite among French viewers for films that delve into contemporary Chinese society, which is evolving at an astonishing pace.

“I want to know how they built the country and how the country is developing,” shared one French resident, expressing a desire to understand the nuances of modern China through cinema. Many echoed this sentiment, emphasizing an interest in narratives that explore China’s rapid urbanization, technological advancements, and cultural shifts.

Historically, Chinese cinema showcased abroad has often focused on traditional themes or historical periods. While these films have been appreciated, there is a burgeoning curiosity about present-day China—its challenges, triumphs, and the everyday lives of its people.

French audiences, known for their appreciation of global cinema, are eager to see stories that resonate with contemporary issues. They hope Chinese filmmakers will portray personal tales set against the backdrop of China’s dynamic social and economic landscape.

This growing interest presents an opportunity for the Chinese film industry to expand its international reach by sharing authentic stories that highlight the country’s modern journey. As cultural exchanges through cinema deepen, both French and Chinese audiences stand to gain a richer understanding of each other’s societies.
