Sudanese Photojournalist Shares Harrowing Ordeal Amid Ongoing Clashes

Khartoum, Sudan — As clashes between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces entered their eighth day on April 22, the toll on civilians continues to mount. According to the World Health Organization, at least 413 people have been killed and 3,551 wounded in the escalating conflict.

Hassan, a local photojournalist, found himself trapped in his office when the fighting erupted. For two days, he and several others were stranded without food or water, uncertain of their fate as violence raged outside. “The situation now is very difficult,” Hassan recounted. “We were isolated, hearing gunfire and explosions, not knowing if we would make it out alive.”

The group’s ordeal highlighted the perilous conditions facing many Sudanese residents caught in the crossfire. Basic necessities have become scarce, and movement within the city is fraught with danger. Hassan and his colleagues eventually found a moment of respite to escape, navigating through deserted streets to reach a safer location.

Another resident, Khaled, expressed deep concern for his community. “Look at the Sudanese people right now,” he said. “Our lives have been turned upside down. We need the world to see what is happening here.”

The international community has called for an immediate cessation of hostilities, urging both sides to consider the humanitarian implications of the ongoing conflict. As the violence persists, stories like Hassan’s underscore the urgent need for peace and stability in Sudan.
