Adderall, a prescription medication commonly used to treat Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), has become a focal point of concern on U.S. college campuses. While intended to aid those with specific medical needs, its misuse among students aiming to boost focus and productivity is on the rise.
A 2022 survey conducted by Ohio State University revealed startling statistics: out of 6,510 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students from 15 institutions across the United States, nearly one in six had used stimulants like Adderall, Ritalin, or Dexedrine without a medical prescription. Of those, a significant 76 percent admitted to using these drugs to enhance their study efforts.
To understand this growing trend, we spoke with students from Oakland University in Detroit about their views on the abuse of prescription stimulants on campuses.
Pressure to Perform
“The academic pressure is intense,” shared Jessica, a sophomore majoring in engineering. “Some students feel they need an extra edge to keep up, especially during exams. It’s not uncommon to hear about classmates using Adderall to pull all-nighters.”
Health Risks Overlooked
Michael, a senior studying psychology, expressed concern about the health implications. “Many don’t realize the potential side effects or the risk of dependency. They see it as a harmless study aid, but it’s a powerful drug that can have serious repercussions.”
Easy Accessibility
“Access is surprisingly easy,” noted Sarah, a junior in business administration. “Some students with prescriptions sell or share their medication. There needs to be more awareness and stricter controls to prevent this.”
Seeking Solutions
Students agreed that universities should take proactive steps to address the issue. “Educational workshops, counseling services, and stress management programs could help,” suggested Liam, a freshman. “We need to tackle the root causes that lead students to misuse these drugs.”
A Call for Awareness
The misuse of prescription stimulants highlights a broader challenge within academic environments: balancing academic demands with student well-being. As the pressure to excel intensifies, fostering a supportive and health-conscious campus culture becomes ever more critical.
