After three challenging years battling COVID-19, China has recently downgraded the management of the disease from Class A to Class B as of January 8. Cities across the nation are gradually optimizing preventive measures and resuming normal work and production.
Zaynab Ali, an artist from Syria who has lived in Nanjing for over seven years, shares her firsthand experience of China’s pandemic response. “I am amazed by the effort and fast response of China’s COVID-19 control measures,” Ali remarks. Living as a foreigner in China has given her a unique perspective on the realities within the country, contrasting sharply with portrayals in some Western media.
“I want to show you something you don’t see in the Western media,” Ali says. Through her art and personal narratives, she seeks to depict the resilience and solidarity she has witnessed among the Chinese people during the pandemic. Ali believes that China has put the lives of its people above everything else over the past three years, a sentiment that resonates deeply with her own values.
As China navigates its path toward normalcy, Ali continues to document her experiences, hoping to bridge cultural gaps and foster greater understanding. Her story reflects the broader narratives of countless residents, both local and international, who have experienced China’s efforts to combat the pandemic firsthand.
