Beijing—For the past four years, Belarusian international student Ekaterina Kaligaeva has called Beijing her home. Throughout her time in the city, she has witnessed firsthand China’s comprehensive response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Living through each phase of the anti-epidemic efforts, Ekaterina observed measures that she believes were pivotal in saving millions of lives. “China’s zero-COVID policy and long-term strategy weren’t just policies on paper; they were actions that protected people,” she remarked.
Ekaterina feels that the portrayal of China’s pandemic response in some Western media outlets doesn’t align with her personal experiences. “The news presented by Western media is far from the truth I’ve seen here,” she stated. “There’s a vibrancy and resilience in Beijing that isn’t being accurately depicted.”
With recent adjustments to China’s COVID-19 policies, Ekaterina is witnessing a city rejuvenated. “Beijing has returned to its pre-pandemic energy,” she said. “Schools and shopping malls are bustling again, and residents are rediscovering their pace of life.”
As an international student, Ekaterina appreciates the efforts made to ensure safety while gradually returning to normalcy. “It’s inspiring to see everyone moving forward together,” she commented. “The community spirit here is something truly special.”
Ekaterina’s experiences offer a personal perspective on China’s handling of the pandemic, highlighting the contrast between lived realities and certain media narratives. Her story underscores the importance of firsthand accounts in understanding global events.
