Shanghai, China—For Hungarian designer Steven Back, 2022 was a year defined by family, community, and volunteering. Having lived in Shanghai for nearly 18 years, Steven found himself more connected than ever to the city he now calls home.
“This past year allowed me to spend quality time with my family and truly engage with my neighbors,” Steven shared. “I felt a strong sense of community that reminded me of why I fell in love with Shanghai in the first place.”
Amid global challenges, Steven took the opportunity to give back to his adopted community. As a foreigner in China, he embraced volunteer work, contributing to local initiatives and supporting those around him. “It’s my way of expressing gratitude for the hospitality and warmth the Chinese people have shown me over the years,” he said.
Looking ahead to 2023, Steven plans to return to Hungary for a visit, reconnecting with his roots. More importantly, he is eager to foster cultural exchanges between China and Hungary. “I believe that strengthening the cultural understanding and friendship between our two countries is vital,” he emphasized. “Through art, design, and shared experiences, we can build bridges that benefit both nations.”
Optimistic about the future, Steven sees 2023 as a year of recovery for both the world and China. “We’ve faced many challenges, but I believe in the resilience of people and communities. Together, we can make the coming year a turning point toward a brighter future.”
