Hungarian Designer Steven Back on the Chinese Dream: Openness, Development, and Happiness

Shanghai, China – For Hungarian designer Steven Back, the journey to China began in 2005, when he first set foot in the vibrant city of Shanghai. Drawn by the country’s rich natural beauty and dynamic culture, he decided to make Shanghai his home and pursue his career in design.

Now, nearly 18 years later, Back reflects on his experiences and the concept of the “Chinese Dream.” He sums it up in three key words: openness, development, and happiness.

“The Chinese Dream is about paying homage to China’s glorious past spanning several millennia,” Back explains. “It’s about making people more conscious and educated about their history and their role in the world—past, present, and future.”

He believes that this deep appreciation for history fosters a sense of self-confidence among the Chinese people. “It’s about making the Chinese more self-confident and prouder of China’s achievements,” he says. “And even more about imagining and fulfilling China’s future potential.”

Back’s perspective is shaped by his nearly two decades of witnessing China’s rapid transformation. He notes that the openness he has experienced is instrumental in driving development and fostering happiness among the populace.

“Openness leads to development,” Back emphasizes. “When people are open to new ideas and cultures, it paves the way for innovation and growth. And with growth comes happiness—not just economic prosperity, but a holistic sense of well-being.”

As China continues to evolve, Back remains optimistic about its future. “China has a unique opportunity to blend its rich heritage with modern advancements,” he says. “The Chinese Dream encapsulates that vision—a future where history and innovation go hand in hand to create a better life for all.”

Back’s journey is a testament to the global resonance of the Chinese Dream. His experience illustrates how individuals from diverse backgrounds can find inspiration and opportunity in China’s dynamic landscape.
