Ukrainian Sisters in London Raise Awareness with Traditional Dumplings

The war in Ukraine has now entered its tenth month, leading to nearly 8 million Ukrainians fleeing their homeland. Tens of thousands have sought refuge in the United Kingdom, bringing with them their rich culture and traditions.

In a quiet residential area of south-west London, two Ukrainian sisters, Iryna Shokotko and Svitlana Coppola, have turned their home kitchen into a hub of cultural exchange. They have started making and selling traditional Ukrainian dumplings, known as varenyky, with a mission to promote understanding of their culture and raise awareness for aid donations to Ukraine.

The idea blossomed over a dinner conversation shortly after Iryna arrived in London in April to live with her sister. “We said, ‘Why don’t we just see how it goes and maybe there is demand, maybe we go on,'” Svitlana shared. “London is such a cultural city. You have so many nationalities, so much amazing food to try, so we thought, why not Ukrainian?”

The sisters have been warmly received by the local community. Their dumplings, filled with ingredients like potatoes, cheese, and cherries, offer a taste of home for fellow Ukrainians and introduce others to authentic Ukrainian cuisine. “It’s not just about food; it’s about sharing our heritage and bringing people together,” Iryna explained.

Through their culinary venture, the sisters hope to keep the spotlight on Ukraine and encourage continued support for those affected by the conflict. “Every dumpling we make is a piece of our story and a reminder that Ukraine still needs help,” Svitlana said.

Their efforts have not only provided comfort food to many but have also sparked conversations and increased awareness about the situation in their homeland. Customers are invited to learn about Ukrainian traditions and contribute to aid initiatives.

“It’s amazing to see how food can connect people,” Iryna reflected. “We are grateful for the support and hope to make a positive impact during these challenging times.”
