On November 21 (November 22 Beijing time), China’s Sichuan Province and the U.S. state of Washington held an online celebration to mark the 40th anniversary of their establishment of friendship relations.
The executive vice governor of Sichuan, Li Yunze, highlighted the extensive cooperation between Sichuan and Washington over the past four decades. “Our collaboration spans trade and investment, science and technology innovation, cultural and educational exchanges, and environmental protection,” Li said. He extended a warm welcome to businesses from Washington state to continue exploring opportunities in Sichuan.
Zhang Jianmin, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in San Francisco, emphasized the importance of local collaboration in fostering a healthy China-U.S. relationship. “The strong ties between Sichuan and Washington benefit both regions and contribute to the broader relationship between our two countries,” Zhang remarked. He expressed hope that all parties would strengthen friendly exchanges to promote mutual understanding and cooperation.
Washington Secretary of State Steve Hobbs spoke of the solid friendship his state shares with Sichuan. “We look forward to broader exchanges, especially in people-to-people interactions, cultural exchanges, and student programs,” Hobbs said. “These efforts will promote understanding and friendship between China and the U.S.”
The online event featured a short film showcasing the friendship at the Sichuan Giant Panda Center and performances by young students from both regions. A joint statement was released, reaffirming the commitment to strengthen ties and cooperation.
Looking to the future, both sides agreed to promote cooperation in clean energy and environmental protection. They also aim to deepen cultural exchanges in tourism, student exchange programs, and other areas to build enduring friendships between China and the U.S.
Washington state was the first provincial-level international friendship region with Sichuan, signing an agreement in 1982. Over the past 40 years, this relationship has served as a model for subnational cooperation between the two countries.
