Ambassador Qin Gang Invokes ‘Hamilton’ to Urge China-U.S. Cooperation

In a recent interview on Al-Jazeera’s “The Bottom Line,” Chinese Ambassador to the U.S. Qin Gang emphasized the importance of cooperation between China and the United States, drawing inspiration from the acclaimed American musical “Hamilton.”

Referencing a poignant moment from the musical, Ambassador Qin recalled the historic duel between Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury, and Vice President Aaron Burr. The fatal encounter led to profound regret, with Burr lamenting, “The world is big enough for me and Mr. Hamilton.”

“I want to borrow Mr. Burr’s remarks: the world is big enough for China and the United States,” Qin Gang stated. “We don’t need to have a tragic incident from more than 200 years ago repeat itself today.”

Ambassador Qin underscored the need for the two nations to work collaboratively, respecting each other’s differences. He stressed that mutual understanding and cooperation are essential to prevent conflicts reminiscent of historical tragedies.

The interview highlighted the evolving dynamics of China-U.S. relations, with Qin advocating for dialogue and partnership over rivalry. His comments come at a time when global challenges such as the pandemic, climate change, and economic recovery necessitate joint efforts from the world’s leading economies.

“The world today is interconnected and interdependent,” Qin added. “China and the United States have a shared responsibility to promote peace and prosperity. Let us learn from history and choose a path of cooperation rather than confrontation.”
