The Sinhala and Tamil New Year, known locally as Aluth Avurudda, is a significant cultural celebration in Sri Lanka, marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the new year according to the Buddhist and Hindu calendars.
This year, the festivities took on a special meaning for Chen Jianyong, a Chinese employee working on the China State Construction (CSCEC) Tri-Zen Residential Development project in Colombo. Invited by his Sri Lankan colleague Suranga, Chen had the unique opportunity to experience the New Year celebrations firsthand in a local household.
Upon arriving at Suranga’s home, Chen and his colleagues were warmly welcomed by the family. The air was filled with the aroma of traditional Sri Lankan dishes prepared specially for the occasion. Together, they participated in customary rituals, shared meals, and exchanged blessings for the year ahead.
“It was an unforgettable experience,” Chen shared. “Participating in the New Year traditions with Suranga’s family gave me a deeper appreciation for Sri Lankan culture and the importance of community and togetherness.”
The celebration included traditional games, the lighting of oil lamps, and the sharing of sweetmeats like Kavum and Kokis. For Chen, these moments highlighted the rich cultural tapestry of Sri Lanka and fostered a greater connection between his own heritage and that of his colleagues.
Suranga expressed his joy in sharing the festivities with his international colleagues. “It’s a time for unity and joy,” he said. “Having Chen and others join us made the celebration even more special.”
The exchange not only strengthened camaraderie among the team but also exemplified the harmonious blending of cultures in today’s globalized world. Such interactions contribute to mutual understanding and respect, essential values in multicultural workplaces.
As the New Year unfolds, both Chen and Suranga look forward to continued collaboration and shared experiences, embodying the spirit of friendship that transcends borders.
