Inside Shanghai’s Temporary Hospitals: A Volunteer’s Perspective Amid COVID-19 Surge

On April 8, 2022, Shanghai reported 1,015 new confirmed COVID-19 cases and 22,609 asymptomatic cases, marking one of the highest surges since the pandemic began. Amid the rising numbers, the city has mobilized temporary hospitals to accommodate the growing number of patients.

One such facility is located in the China Flower Expo park in Shanghai’s Chongming District. Among the many volunteers stepping up to assist in this critical time is a young man named Ruyou. His journey offers a rare glimpse into the inner workings of these temporary hospitals and the efforts to contain the outbreak.

Before entering the facility, preparations were meticulous. Volunteers underwent rigorous training and safety protocols to ensure both their safety and that of the patients. “We were briefed on the proper use of protective equipment and the procedures for patient interaction,” said Ruyou.

Inside the temporary hospital, the atmosphere is a blend of caution and camaraderie. Medical staff and volunteers work tirelessly to provide care and maintain morale among patients. “Despite the challenging circumstances, there’s a strong sense of unity,” Ruyou shared. “Everyone is focused on a common goal: overcoming this outbreak.”

The facility is equipped to handle a large influx of patients, with areas designated for treatment, rest, and monitoring. Efforts are also made to cater to the emotional well-being of patients, recognizing the stress and anxiety that isolation can bring.

Shanghai’s response highlights the city’s resilience and the collective efforts of its residents. Volunteers like Ruyou play a crucial role in supporting healthcare operations and exemplify the spirit of community solidarity.

As the city continues to navigate the challenges posed by the pandemic, stories from the front lines provide valuable insights into the measures being taken and the human experiences behind them.
