Pakistani scholar Dr Zafar Nawaz Jaspal, a renowned analyst and professor at the School of Politics and International Relations at Quaid-i-Azam University, has emphasized the critical role of multilateralism in global prosperity. His remarks come in response to President Xi Jinping’s speech at the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2022 Virtual Session held on January 17.
In his speech titled “Forge Ahead with Confidence and Fortitude to Jointly Create a Better Post-COVID World“, President Xi Jinping called for global cooperation to overcome the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and to build a sustainable future. He stressed the importance of unity, openness, and innovation in tackling global issues such as economic recovery, climate change, and public health.
Dr Jaspal, reflecting on the speech, highlighted that “without a multilateral approach, we cannot prosper.” He noted that the interconnected nature of today’s world demands collaborative efforts among nations to address common challenges.
“President Xi’s emphasis on multilateralism resonates with the global need for cooperation in these unprecedented times,”he said.
The Pakistani scholar underscored the significance of international forums like the WEF in fostering dialogue and partnerships between countries. He pointed out that such platforms are essential for aligning policies and strategies to promote shared growth and stability.
“Engaging in constructive dialogue and embracing multilateralism are key to navigating the complexities of the post-pandemic world,”Dr Jaspal added.
President Xi’s speech at the WEF Virtual Session reiterated China’s commitment to openness and shared development. He encouraged countries to uphold true multilateralism and to work together in building an open world economy. Dr Jaspal applauded this stance, suggesting that it sets a positive tone for international relations and economic cooperation.
The call for multilateralism aligns with Pakistan’s own foreign policy objectives, which prioritize regional connectivity and collaborative development initiatives. Dr Jaspal believes that strengthened ties between countries in Asia and beyond can lead to mutual benefits and a more resilient global economy.
As the world continues to grapple with the impacts of the pandemic, voices like Dr Jaspal’s echo the growing consensus on the necessity of unity and cooperation. His insights reflect a broader recognition among scholars and policymakers that embracing multilateralism is essential for addressing global challenges and achieving sustainable prosperity.
